Domain D - Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences
Long-term and short-term planning are key to success in the classroom. Something I heard quoted by Maria, is that "without instructional objectives, learning becomes accidental rather than predictable." The curriculum cycle is an example of long-term planning that includes specifying grade level outcomes, designing curriculum based on the desired outcomes, and assess and adjust throughout. Short-term planning is also important and can be easily accomplished by using models such as the seven step, direct lesson plan. The direct lesson plan includes identifying behavioral objectives and developing a lesson based on the objective.
It's also important to know how to find out the most important elements of your curriculum. The California Content Standards and Frameworks guide teachers through content and highlight the key elements in the content.
